Battle of the diets: Portions Versus Fasting

Depending on what side of the divide you sit, dieting has been proven to be an effective technique for managing weight.

According to the American National Institute of Health, 3 out every 5 Americans have resulted to dieting to lose weight.

However, when it comes to choosing what a dieting technique to go with; others prefer watching their weight by taking small portions while others prefer fasting.Portion control is based on the principle at any given time, a given volume of food contains a constant number of calories therefore the less the volume of food consumed, the lower the calorie intake.

People who practice portion control do it by substituting the calories that they are trying to cut with water. So for example, if a person who takes 250 grams of proteins decides try portion control, they might decide to take 195 grams of protein but with a lot of water. Fasting Intermittent fast refers to the conscious decision to skip a meal. The main concern with fasting is that when you fast, the body produces stress hormone called cortisol. When the body produces cortisol, a lot of water is retained by the body.

Essentially what that means is more water retention means you actually gain weight as opposed to losing weight.
As a matter of fact, when you deny yourself a meal the body assumes that you are under distress so therefore it will overcompensate by retaining a lot of water and therefore when you stop fasting the body will over-compensating. So what do I choose; Fasting or Portion control?
It all depends on the preference of an individual and the prevailing medical conditions of an individual. Should one decide to fast, it means they have decided to forfeit all the nutrients while with portion control, one can include all the nutrients desired so long as they regulate the food quantity.

Another factor to consider is that portion control might not always be effective due to the fact that calories remain constant therefore it means that you might not necessarily lose weight by watching the portions you eat. However, portion control can be complimented by ensuring that you also monitor the quality of food you take and the preparation method of the food. You can opt for flame grilled food as opposed to deep fried food.

Alternatively, you can opt for salads as opposed to fast foods or if you decide that you can’t do without fast foods then it is important that you compliment them with greens, smoothies and a lot of water. Dieting should also be complimented with other weight management techniques for example, even as you fast or watch your portions, you should also work out or run so that you maintain a healthy life style in general.

In conclusion, dieting is a matter of what one prefers and in some cases – the prevailing medical or genetic conditions. In order to find what works for you, settle on the most comfortable options. In addition, do not result to a technique that you find to be strenuous for your efforts to manage your weight will be counterproductive. It is also key that you compliment your dieting efforts with other weight management techniques such as working out in order to maximize your chances of losing weight.
